Se espera que los efectos negativos de estos agentes sobre el rendimiento de la productividad vegetal aumenten durante este siglo debido al actual <b>Cambio Clim\u00e1tico Globa<\/b>l, amenazando as\u00ed la seguridad alimentaria, forestal y biodiversidad. Desde un punto de vista molecular y mecan\u00edstico, se llevan a cabo investigaciones relativas a la regulaci\u00f3n y funci\u00f3n de productos g\u00e9nicos involucrados en conferir tolerancia en las plantas frente a condiciones ambientales desfavorables, v\u00edas de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n de fitohormonas y sus respuestas funcionales cruzadas entre s\u00ed y el medio externo. Por otra parte, las plantas proporcionan un nicho ecol\u00f3gico \u00fanico para diversas comunidades de microorganismos simbi\u00f3ticos cr\u00edpticos (por ej. hongos end\u00f3fitos), las que a menudo contribuyen con m\u00faltiples beneficios a las plantas (mayor rendimiento fisiol\u00f3gico, eficiencia en el uso de nutrientes y agua, y tolerancia a la sequ\u00eda, enfermedades, calor y plagas). Consecuentemente, investigadores del instituto trabajan en caracterizar la adaptaci\u00f3n de estas especies introducidas a las condiciones locales, as\u00ed como bioprospectar recursos gen\u00e9ticos nativos considerando el alto nivel de endemismo en Chile. En ambos casos es posible el desarrollo de programas de selecci\u00f3n de variedades de especies vegetales de relevancia para el pa\u00eds. Para ello, se estudia la gen\u00e9tica y gen\u00f3mica funcional del desarrollo floral y frutal, la domesticaci\u00f3n de plantas frutales nativas, la fisiolog\u00eda de la maduraci\u00f3n de frutos mediante regulaci\u00f3n hormonal, ablandamiento y producci\u00f3n de compuestos que proporcionan aromas, la bioqu\u00edmica y fisiolog\u00eda de post-cosecha de frutos, la selecci\u00f3n asistida en gen\u00f3mica para mejorar la producci\u00f3n de biomasa y bioetanol, y los mecanismos moleculares involucrados en la remodelaci\u00f3n de la pared vegetal en especies forestales.<\/p>\n<p><u>Investigadores asociados a esta l\u00ednea de investigaci\u00f3n<\/u>: Dra. de la agricultura, la batalla contra las plagas est\u00e1 lejos de ser asegurada. Esta amenaza bi\u00f3tica se espera aumente a medida que el calentamiento global y las sequ\u00edas progresan porque las plagas tienden ser m\u00e1s exitosas en climas m\u00e1s c\u00e1lidos. Con el Cambio Clim\u00e1tico Global la ocurrencia de eventos de invasi\u00f3n es m\u00e1s probable y el control biol\u00f3gico pierde efectividad. En este contexto, investigadores del instituto, estudian las bases ecol\u00f3gicas, fisiol\u00f3gicas y moleculares de la agresividad de las plagas agr\u00edcolas tanto introducidas como nativas, y sus consecuencias evolutivas. Adem\u00e1s, se estudia el rol de ciertas bacterias sobre rasgos agron\u00f3micos relevantes que contribuyen al estatus de plaga y sus consecuencias sobre el funcionamiento de los agroecosistemas.
